Spring Colors for 2013

Well Winnipeg may be in a blanket of monochromatic white but here in the store we are soaking up the new spring colors for 2013 with our new arrivals. It's making us so happy just to see some color:kind of like a rainbow sunlamp so we thought we'd share Pantone's top spring color picks. We are hoping Winnipeg weather is paying attention!

We"re working on getting pics of our spring line-up but until then here's a look at how some of the top designers did it!

I'm a sucker for Lemon-Zest-so much so that i brought a dress into the store in that color in December. How can you resist sunshine in the winter:)
What colors make you happy?

A Hearty bowl of comfort-Lentil Soup

-->

I  am a soup person. I never used to be, but at some point in my life, I had a total “a-ha!” moment. I realized a few things. First, soup is delicious. Second, soup is a whole, nutritious meal in a single bowl. Third, soup is a hearty bowl of comfort on a cold day. Fourth, soup is the perfect vehicle for getting warm, flaky, buttery bread to your mouth and is therefore the perfect excuse for buying said bread. Now, I spend all winter making and eating different soups. I have a particular weakness for lentil soup. I have yet to meet a lentil soup I didn’t like. The best thing about lentil soup is that it is a great starting point for all sorts of flavour combinations. Greek lentil soup? Done. Moroccan lentil soup? The best. Coconut than curry lentil soup? Obviously. I have made just about every kind of lentil soup there is. Or, at least I thought I had. And then I went to Naji’s. Naji’s is my favourite restaurant in Ottawa. If you are in Ottawa right now, what are you waiting for? Get yourself to Naji’s! It is a delightful Lebanese restaurant that serves, you guessed it, amazing lentil soup. After trying the soup, I set out on a mission to re-create the soup at home. I would order the soup, go home, and scrawl some notes. I have finally reached a version that is very, very close and I just had to share it with you.

-->
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
2 Tbsp olive oil
½ large onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup red lentils, sorted through for bits of pebbles and rinsed thoroughly
½ cup Arborio (or other short to medium grain) rice
1 scant Tbsp za’atar (*see note below)
7 cups vegetable broth
Generous pinches salt and pepper
Juice of ½ lemon

  Directions:
(1) Melt butter and oil in large saucepot over medium heat. Add onion and cook stirring for 5 minutes until very soft but not browned. Add garlic and cook stirring until fragrant, 1 minute.
(2) Add lentils and rice to pot and stir well to coat. Stir in za’atar.
(3) Add broth and salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer for 25 – 30 minutes until lentils are very soft and falling apart. Soup will thicken as it cooks, so if you like a thicker soup, cook for a few minutes longer.
(4) In last 5 minutes of cooking, add lemon juice and continue to simmer covered.
(5) Serve with pita, pita chips or naan bread.  This would also be really good with a swirl of plain Greek yogurt drizzled over top.

*Note – za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend. I found it at a great bulk store, but you may be able to find it in a well-stocked grocery store. You can also make it yourself at home – Bon Appetit and Fine Cooking online both have recipes for homemade za’atar. Use up leftover za’atar by making pita chips with it, sprinkling it over roasted eggplant, or using it as a topping for flatbread.

Working the sale in -40 weather!

Yes it's a little frosty out there  but on the upside there are great deals to be had here at our store and elsewhere as retailers get ready for their spring arrivals.Good buys are around if you need a coat and can still find your size but the best deals are transitional pieces that you can wear throughout the seasons. We found this Gentle Fawn tunic and hat at 40% off. With all that savings maybe you can find a last minute sun vacation or at the very least grab a pina colada, bare a little bit of a shoulder  put on the floppy hat and  live in perfect blissful denial for a while!

Belt and tights are perfect for evening but take them off and add some flipflops and you have a perfect bathing suit cover -up.

Great Food Reads for the New Year!

-->                                                   Great  Food Reads

For all of you out there who love food, get ready for possibly the best tip you will receive in 2013 (since 2013 is just beginning, this is pretty big news). You can take cookbooks out of the library. Really good cookbooks. Do you know how expensive cookbooks are? Those babies can cost upwards of $34.99 a book! The cost of one cookbook alone could buy you a super great necklace or a cute tee at Out of the Blue (and yes, I always translate savings into what I could put that money towards at Out of the Blue. It has been a problem since I was 16). You can take a cookbook out of the library for free (or the cost of a library card), read it at home, and write down recipes you’d like to make sometime (you wouldn’t photocopy the pages because you are a law abiding person who totally respects copyright and therefore also only watches cable you’ve paid for and listens to music you have bought).

The bottom line is that reading about cooking is fun, and can be done for free or pretty low cost. That said, there are definitely food reads worth paying money for and some of these are pointed out below.

With all this in mind, behold the Great Food Reads List!

Great Food Blog-  Smitten Kitchen

Deb Perelman had to quit her day job to work on her Smitten Kitchen blog, that’s how popular it is. Smitten Kitchen is not just popular, it is really, really good. Think inspiring food photography and delicious recipes. Plus, Deb loves to minimize your amount of dirty dishes and her recipes are always really easy to follow. Some of my favourites include the Spring Panzanella (I took an adapted version to a Competitive Potluck and tied for first place!) and the Mushroom Bourguignon.

Great Cookbooks
The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook
Deb also has a cookbook! The book is as awesome as the blog. It is also available at the Winnipeg Public Library. Go put a request on it right now.

The Canadian Living Vegetarian Collection

For the sake of variety, I’ve included a non-Smitten Kitchen option. This Canadian Living collection is one of my most used cookbooks. I have almost cooked my way through the whole book. There is a great and diverse selection of vegetarian recipes, most with easy to find ingredients. I’m pretty crazy about the Black Bean Quesadillas and the Smoked Gouda Risotto.

Great Food Magazine
Bon Appetit
Under Editor-in-Chief Adam Rapoport’s hip guidance, Bon Appetit has become a super cool food magazine with truly readable content. The recipes are still classy enough to serve at a chic dinner party, but are easy to follow and feature easy to find seasonal ingredients.  Bonus – you can find issues of Bon Appetit at the library and bonappetit.com has a huge recipe archive. Try the secretly healthy Horseradish-Cottage Cheese dip for something different but delicious.

Great Food Website
Food52
This one comes highly recommended from one of the best former Out of the Blue girls, Ms. Erika French Onion herself (and she is very stylish and has very good taste, so you should follow her advice). Food52 is crowd-sourced food website with community sourced recipes and tricks. If you ever want to spend hours lost in a website’s archives, this is the site for you.

Great Food Book
Heat
Bill Buford tracks his journey from writer to culinary apprentice (in Mario Batali’s kitchen no less). This is a truly entertaining read that offers an enlightening look at what happens behind-the-scenes in the world of Michelin star dining.

When Life Gets A Little Crazy...

Hey Everyone,
So we hope you all had a good holiday. Like all holidays some things work and other stuff gets so messed up you just want to dip in to the eggnog a few extra times!.
We planned to have holiday posts: our staff xmas party, top resolutions;boxing day madness and other events that were going on around town but  some technical difficulties-(like all the photos got eaten during the download..arghhh) and a few other things that were beyond our control prevented us from posting.

But all the things that didn't work got me thinking about all the stuff that did work and how a few seemingly small things always seem to come through  and make life during those stressful times a little bit more manageable.

Aside from family, friends and staff here are a few of my favorite ,bullet-proof always comes through for me stuff!

                                                    Dave's Masala Marinara

I found this gem 2 months ago at Costco. Its a lovely fusion of Italian marinara and South East Asian flavors all of which you can pronounce! Really! Think tomatoes, coconut milk, ginger, lime, lemongrass...and it's gluten-free! Yum
I like to add a good pinch of cumin and throw it over some some veggies and chick peas for a healthy soul- satisfying meal that you could actually pass off as your own! I've tried other Dave products but for me this one is the best!

                                         Nars Powder Blush In Orgasm

It's a little pricey but thankfully cheeks are small and when i've gone white with the horror of a computer meltdown  this lovely gem of a blush has a super pretty pinkish hue with just enough of a golden sheen to make me look like all is well with the world. (a little denial can be a good thing:)Ask Sephora for a free sample-they are great for that!

                                                                    Songza

One of my favorite apps in the whole-wide world is songza. I love the concierge on this app who knows what day it is and asks if you want music to ease in to your day or save the world. You can explore your "moods" and choose whatever it is that you need at the moment. Even the weather doesn't escape Songza's ambitious range.Right now I'm listening to Winter Unplugged..thanks Songza

                                                                  Jenga

I actually just found this game but holy addiction i love it.I appreciate the sheer simplicity of the game setup-no complicated rules to get in the way of actually playing! Then for as many minutes as possible all you have  to worry about is moving blocks as best as you can.Its like nasal spray for the brain-clears out all that nasty stuff that may be congesting your head space! Then the best part of all-if the blocks tumble you can just start a new game and start building.A metaphor for life you say...well you can decide .I hear there is also a drinking version. Either way i highly recommend it!

                                                                  Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is like the big sister i never had..the one that says uh huh..you want to control everything do you...get all this stuff done by when???? So hows that working out for ya?
And then with a big smile she invites me to slow down, breathe, accept with all the loving kindness i can muster the endless possibilities of being open to what we can and cannot change.
Ya i know it might sound a little corny but i got to tell you it seems to work- the endorphin rush alone could rival the nars orgasm blush sans blush:)

Would love to here what's on your go to list when life gets a little crazy.

Wishing you all a great 2013

Peace and Joy
wendy
